Presentation

Djamel Tatah (born in 1959) studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Etienne from 1981 to 1986. After moving to Marseille in 1989, he began producing large-format paintings and polyptychs, exploring themes related to the urban condition and war, or depicting the human figure suspended in the air or free falling.

_

The artist held his first solo exhibition at the Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert Gallery in Paris in 1999. Since then, he has presented his works throughout France and the world over, including the Salamanca Art Center, (2002), the Guangdong Museum of Art in China (2005), the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes (2008), the MAMAC Nice (2009), the Villa Medici in Rome and the Château de Chambord (2011).

_

In his creative process, he combines the ancient technique of wax painting with photography and, since 1994, also incorporates digital technology. All his compositions are executed in the same manner: with his photographs of family and close friends serving an image bank, he reworks his pictures on the computer screen, creating compositions that are then projected onto the canvas, drawn and painted.

_

In Djamel Tatah paintings of contemporary figures, abstraction seems to overtake reality and make it disappear. His life-size portraits, stripped of volume and flesh, inhabit colorful geometric spaces. Silent and suspended in time, Djamel Tatah’s lone wanderers, slackers and reclining figures are motifs renewed incessantly from painting to painting.

 _

“In his twenty-five years of involvement with painting, Tatah has remained loyal to the formal principles laid down very early on and based on a very simple intent: to tirelessly highlight the way in which humanity, embodied in whatever singularities, can assert itself as a presence in the world.”  Eric de Chassey, "Djamel Tatah" Exhibition's catalogue to Alger (MAMA) and Saint-Paul (Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation), 2013.
